Development Intern

Reports to: Director of Development

Status: Part time, unpaid

Position Overview:

The Development Intern will support the Director of Development with aspects of fundraising to support the school garden programming of Hudson Valley Seed. This is an excellent opportunity for young professionals seeking experience in the nonprofit field.


  • Grant writing: For small grant applications (under $5,000), draft applications based off of answers to similar previous applications.

  • Grant research: Conduct preliminary research on prospective corporate, foundation, and individual donors.

  • Database: Update and correct database records. Data entry of new constituent and address information.

  • Mailings: Checking address lists for accuracy, printing letters, stuffing envelopes, addressing envelopes, affixing stamps on envelopes or working with post office to meter envelopes, delivering mailing to post office.

  • Etc: Other duties as assigned by the Development Manager and Executive Director.


  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills. Ability to present information concisely, compellingly, and effectively, both verbally and in writing.

  • Ability to organize and prioritize work, and work independently with little supervision. Keen attention to detail and deadlines.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Google Docs and Google Sheets. Training will be given to work with Bloomerang database.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills. A great sense of humor with an ability to encourage fun and laughter in a team environment.

  • A knowledge of the Hudson Valley and a passion for gardening, food justice, local and sustainable agriculture, and/or public elementary education are prefered but not required.

  • Current college students and recent graduates seeking experience in the nonprofit field, with a focus on fundraising and/or communications, are especially encouraged to apply.

Status:  10-15 hours per week, part-time, flexible hours/schedule

Wage:   This is an unpaid internship.

Location: Beacon (HVS office), with potential to also work remotely.
